![]() ![]() And yes, you can switch mid battle so you can fight close range or long range. Ludger also can fight with both dual swords and dual guns. This is the first ever Tales games that the player has had this much control of the game, and I hope that they continue this in future Tales games. These will affect anything from the story to each companion character’s affinity towards you. Throughout the game, during the storyline, skits, and character quests, you will have to make a choice in Ludger’s dialogue and decisions. While some fans are mistaking this for Ludger having a lack of personality, it’s more to show that you are literally playing as him. He has very few lines in the game, aside from some sighs and grunts, because this Tales games actually focuses on choices. Luger is essentially a silent protagonist. Let’s start with Ludger, who actually is getting mixed reviews on all the groups I belong to on Facebook. Ludger is my favorite protagonist, making decisions is awesome, the already great battle system is even better, I really love leveling up via a grid, time travel is still confusing to me, and debt is really fucking annoying. Now, at only 10 hours into the game and on currently messing around in Chapter 4, I can assure you about several things. (News flash: he’s the best!) After spending a few minutes unboxing the stellar Ludger statue among other additions, and leafing through the beautiful artbook, I finally popped in the game. I came home Tuesday with a giant collector’s edition under my arm as an early birthday present from the boyfriend. But I’m proud to announce that Tales of Xillia 2 is better, or at least slowly making its way to the top spot on my Tales list. Nothing special, but something fun all the same. So while I was deeply excited for Tales of Xillia 2, I was expecting just a decent sequel much like Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. There was something about Xillia that just spoke to me. Gasp all you want, and fight me all you want about how Tales of Symphonia is still the best, but this is my opinion. You may not think that is a big deal, but I should probably preface this with the fact that Tales of Xillia quickly took the top spot for my all time favorite Tales game. My point here is that for the first time in a long time, I’m enjoying a sequel more than the original. Although that is not always the rule, so don’t condemn me if you like a particular sequel more. The norm is simply that the original game usually tends to hold a higher place in a gamer’s heart than the sequel. Even my deep rooted obsession for Final Fantasy X-2still doesn’t rival my love for Final Fantasy X, because in reality the two games are completely different. The jarring change in voice cast also turned me off. Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World wasn’t so bad, especially because the gameplay remained similar to Tales of Symphonia, however, the story just didn’t have the same hold as the original. Dragon Age 2, while having a much smoother battle system, completely fell short of Dragon Age: Origins in every other aspect of gameplay. It is very rare for me to love any sequel more than an original game. ![]() ![]() However, these are my first thoughts about Tales of Xillia 2.* *Before I begin, I have to stress that I have not finished the game yet. ![]()
